Impossible Dream - Andy Williams

Impossible Dream - Andy Williams

To dream the impossible dream,
To fight the unbeatable foe,
To bear with unbearable sorrow,
To run where the brave dare not go.

To right the unrightable wrong,
To love pure and chaste from afar,
To try when your arms are too weary,
To reach the unreachable star.

This is my quest,
To follow that star --
No matter how hopeless,
No matter how far.

To fight for the right
Without question or pause,
To be willing to march
Into hell for a heavenly cause.

And I know if I'll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will be peaceful and calm
when I'm laid to my rest.

And the world will be better for this,
that one man scorned and covered with scars
still strove with his last ounce of courage.
To fight the unbeatable foe,
To reach the unreachable star ~

Explanation
Besides the brief mention of the "unreachable stars" (nature), Andy Williams's Impossible Dream reflects the ideas of transcendentalism including confidence and self-reliance. According to the lyrics, Williams is not afraid to bear sorrow, to run where the brave dare not to go, to fight the unbeatable foe, or to ultimately dream the impossible dream. He is, in other words, not afraid to confront any challenges or obstacles that might impede his march towards his life's objectives. The climax of Williams' confidence is demonstrated as he claims "That one man scorned and covered with scars still strove with his last ounce of courage".

The characteristic of self-reliance is also portrayed in the lyrics of this song. Andy Williams strongly believes in what he thinks it the right thing to do. "This is my quest, to follow that star, No matter how hopeless, no matter how far". By his rightful actions, he predicts he will benefit himself and perhaps the rest of the world by bringing peace. "And I know if I'll only be true to this glorious quest that my heart will lie peaceful and calm when I'm laid to my rest". As Williams describes his quest through life as a glorious one, the audience can reasonably imply that he is quite self-reliant and confident.
